Route to Haines

We started the drive in heavy rain. To get to Haines, we had to cross the Alaskan mountain range towards
the ocean. After some of the clouds retracted, the road turned into one of the most beautiful drives of
our trip.
You see multiple glaciers hanging between the mountain peaks on both sides of the road and the
vegetation changes quickly. On the Canadian side, you start in small-grown taiga forest, climb up to
tundra and then on the US side you drive down to mountain forests and finally to the northern Pacific
rainforest with huge trees and plenty of other vegetation.
Once in Haines, we stocked up supplies, visited the local microbrewery, and went for a hike in the
forests along the coast. After seeing the rather small and colorless birch and spruce trees of the taiga
vegetation for such a long time, it was great to see the huge trees with the intensively green
vegetation along the coast! And of course, we enjoyed a cold beverage at the beach with a spectacular view
of the Haines Fjord – which is surrounded by glacier covered mountains.
For the night, we found a beautiful and remote campsite in the forest, and spent the evening on the
coast, looking at sea, mountains, glaciers, and enjoying the sunset. Haines – a great place to go! (And
the town is also quite cute!)

Opět jsme snídali ve stanu za zvuku bubnujících kapek vody. Předpověď vypadala mizerně, tak jsme se
rozhodli o co nejrychlejší úprk do USA zpět na Aljašku do městečka Haines. Celkem jsme potřebovali ujet
asi 220 km.
Cesta do Haines je naprosto úchvatná. Silnici lemují hory a ledovce a čím se člověk blíží více k moři,
tím se výrazně mění příroda. Od studené tundry, přes tajgu až k pralesnímu pásu. Před polednem jsme
překročili zpět hranici do USA a dorazili k moři do Haines. Z Haines nám jede trajekt do města Prince
Rupert v Kanadě asi 1000 km jižně. Ušetří nám to asi 3 dny řízení, takže to za to stojí. Haines je
velice malé a přívětivé městečko a překvapila nás až neamerická upravenost. Je to asi dané množstvím
turistů, kteří sem každoročně proudí.
Zašli jsme do místních turistických informací a zjistili předpověď počasí, místo odkud jede trajekt,
kempy a doporučený výlet na odpoledne. Udělali jsme krátkou zastávku v místním pivovaru a ochutnali
Haineskou IPU a světlý mok.
Kousek za městem jsme nastoupili na trail podél moře a udělali nenáročnou procházku na asi 2 hodiny.
Asi 15 km za městečkem se u moře nachází kemp, kam jsme zamířili. U moře bylo velice větrno, ale za
výhledy to určitě stálo. Počasí v Haines se umoudřilo a viděli jsme i docela dost modré oblohy.
