Conquering Yukon and the Goldrush - Dawson City

After three days of almost exclusively driving and only relaxing at the evening campsites, we reached
Whitehorse, the capital of the famous Yukon Territory. In Whitehorse, we only stocked up on supplies,
visited an old river steamboat, and continued further north to Dawson City – the infamous Goldrush
Town.
The drive to Dawson was both fascinating but also draining due to the landscape. The forests there are
so huge and wide, both beautiful and monotonous at the same time, that after a few days you get really
happy to see some different vegetation.
Dawson City was created in 1898 because of the Klondike Goldrush – where gold was found in the nearby
Klondike river. At that time, the city grew to 30,000 inhabitants within only three years but its
population soon decreased to nowadays 1,000 inhabitants.
The City still features several historical buildings from that time, e.g., a Saloon, Bank, and Post Office
that can be visited by a tour and really give you the feeling of the “wild west”. We took such a tour,
visited the site where the first gold was found, and took a tour of the “Dredge Number 4”, a crazy and huge
industrial floating excavator that was used for industrialized goldmining.
To give a better understanding, here is some information about the goldmining in Dawson: there, the gold
does not have to be extracted from the rocks themselves. Instead, it is mixed as loose dust and small
nuggets with dirt and smaller stones. To get this gold, you wash the dirt out of the bigger rocks and
let the dirty water flow over fabric mats, where the gold gets stuck due to its high density. The first
years of the goldrush in Dawson, this process was done by many people for themselves in tedious manual
labor under harsh conditions (Even in August we had sub-zero temperatures at night!).
At the beginning of the 20th century, industrial mining started, where the dirt got excavated and washed
by huge machines (see the images). Due to the low gold price in the 1960s, the companies stopped their
gold business in Dawson. Since then, the gold price recovered and now many small family-owned mines
produce the highest amount of gold here. They usually only use a few regular excavators, so you can say
it is a rather small business.
Our next day in Dawson, we visited such a family mine and were even allowed to do gold panning (the most
original form of gold searching).
To complete our time in Dawson City, we went to an awesome viewpoint (where you could obviously drive to
by car, thanks North America :)) and big steaks that we barbecued over the campfire.

Kolem půl jedenácté ráno jsme dorazili do Dawson City. Město je známé především zlatou horečkou. Počet
obyvatel se během krátké letní sezóny ztrojnásobí a je to hodně vidět. Všude jsou krásné stylizované
domky, bazilion restaurací, kaváren a obchodů se suvenýry. Jako první jsme zašli do návštěvnického
centra, kde jsme zjistili informace o možných aktivitách a ubytování. Přívozem jsme překročili řeku
Yukon a na druhé straně nejdříve nakoukli do pochybného hostelu, který vypadal tak trochu jako smetiště.
Nakonec jsme zvolili kemp na druhé straně silnice hned u řeky Yukon.
Vrátili jsme se do města, nakoupili jídlo, dali si oběd a vyrazili směrem k prvnímu claimu. Claim je kus
země, kde se těží zlato. Asi 15 km za městem jsme si prošli naučnou stezku a získali spoustu informací o
počátcích těžby zlata a zlaté horečce.
Cestou zpět do města jsme se zastavili na prohlídce Dredge number 4. Dredge je plovoucí těžební plošina,
která kutá a zároveň extrahuje ze zeminy zlato. Je veliká asi jako třípatrová bytovka. Bylo to asi
nejpůsobivější místo z celého Dawson City. Postavit takové monstrum v takové oblasti je něco
neuvěřitelného. Dokonce kvůli dredgím postavili 60 km daleko vodní elektrárnu. Dredge se používaly až
dlouho po konci zlaté horečky až do šedesátých let a v teplotách až minus 25 stupňů.
Ve městě jsme si koupili na večer steaky a dále se zúčastnili tour po městě pořádanou návštěvnickým
centrem. Byla to trochu show, protože tam byl nějaký herec, který dělal a mluvil jako první objevitel
zlata. Prošli jsme město a zajímavá historická místa jako saloon, banku a poštu.
Večer jsme ugrilovali steaky a parádně si pochutnali. V noci byla u řeky pořádná zima. Ráno byl dokonce
venku led.
